Fire & Security Systems for Schools

Fire and Security Compliance in Irish Schools

Irish schools have a duty of care to take all reasonable measures to guard against the outbreak of a fire and to protect anyone on the premises in such an event, as per the Fire Services Act, 1981, section 18(2). Moreover, the Department of Education’s Fire Strategy in Schools framework mandates that all Irish schools comply with the Fire Services Act

Furthermore, Irish schools are subject to compliance with the S.I. No. 108/2024 – Building Regulations (refer to Part B Amendment, 2024). Specifically, section 4(a) now categorises a school as a “care facility building” and section 4(b) now defines non-residential schools and educational establishments as “places of assembly.”

Fire safety in schools’ regulations must also consider the importance of the Building Regulations’ requirements for emergency lighting, fire detection and alarm systems, and safe exit routes as part of a fire safety plan.

Stalwart ensures fully compliant fire safety in schools that includes compliance with all of the above regulations and frameworks.

Our Fire and Security Solutions for Schools

Stalwart provides comprehensive fire and security solutions for Irish schools, fully compliant and designed to meet the unique needs of our country’s many schools and educational institutions.

Fire Detection Systems

Our PSA-certified experts can assist with the design and installation of fire alarms for schools as well as various key elements of their Fire Detection Systems. This includes automatic fire detection, call points, alarm panels, and smoke detectors in schools, compliant with the Fire Services Act and the Department of Education’s framework.

Emergency Lighting Systems

Safe evacuation routes are essential, particularly in Irish schools, which is why our Emergency Lighting Systems help keep staff and students safe whilst keeping the facility legally compliant with regulations. Our team designs and installs safe evacuation routes in the event of a mains power outage, all in compliance with Building Regulations standards.

CCTV Installation

Maintaining safe schools requires ongoing monitoring, which is why our CCTV Installation services are essential in that endeavour. We design, install, and service CCTV systems in compliance with GDPR, which helps schools better monitor and control key access points whilst deterring potential intruders and assisting with evidence in the event of an incident investigation.

Access Control Systems

Controlling who can enter a school or its constituent classrooms or other rooms is essential, and it requires Access Control Systems that keep occupants of the school safe and secure. Our security systems for schools prevent unauthorised access and are ideal for main school entrances, storage rooms, or other sensitive areas of the facility.

Intruder Alarm Systems

After hours, schools should be kept secure against unauthorised entry with robust Intruder Alarm Systems that notify key personnel and Gardaí the moment an intruder is detected within the premises. Our security alarms for schools can provide immediate monitored alarm response and reduce theft and vandalism.

Gate & Barrier Automation

For many larger primary and secondary school premises, controlled vehicular access for staff and visitors may be necessary. Our Gate & Barrier Automation services assist by controlling access to the school’s car park, which eliminates the risk of unauthorised parking, overnight caravans, or out-of-hours usage.

Integrators – Centralised System Management Cover

Combining some or all of a school’s various fire and safety systems can simplify ongoing site management and monitoring. Our Integrator solutions are ideal for individual schools, but they’re particularly beneficial for multi-building campuses such as universities, multiple school sites, or larger or more complex educational institutions. We offer one convenient dashboard featuring full visibility and a simplified, centralised compliance scheme for reporting and management of all desired systems.

FAQs

Yes. Irish schools are legally required to have an adequate fire detection and alarm system in place as per the Fire Services Act 1981. Given that schools have students and staff as occupants, there is a strong duty of care and an expectation of strict compliance.

In Irish schools, the board of management is responsible for fire safety compliance. In practical day-to-day affairs of the school, the principal is typically designated as the person responsible for maintaining compliance with fire safety regulations.

A school’s fire alarm system should be serviced no fewer than two times per year. A qualified contractor must be retained to carry out a formal inspection and service the fire alarm as necessary, whereas more frequent spot checks should be performed in between these inspections.

Yes. Schools require emergency lighting, highlighting safe evacuation routes in the event of a power outage or an emergency such as a fire, as per IS 3217. These systems should be spot checked routinely and inspected professionally in accordance with IS 3217.

Depending on the school’s layout and the needs of facilities management, a school should typically have multiple security systems in place to ensure safety and security and to prevent or deter unauthorised entry. This may include CCTV surveillance, access control, and intruder alarms, as well as fire detection and alarms.

Yes. Managing several discrete security systems independently can be challenging and inefficient, whereas integrating these systems under one centralised platform can greatly enhance school security and its management. Integrator solutions achieve exactly this goal, and they make management of fire and security systems efficient and streamlined.
